Cornelius Keg System
The Cornelius keg system is an apparatus set up to keep your beverage, specifically your home-made beer cool and keep it in an optimal environment, conducive for consumption. The Cornelius system is simply a CO2 system. The apparatus is quite simple - Canisters of CO2 or a CO2 tank, a regulator, a beverage set-up and a gas set-up are all that is needed to set your Cornelius system in place.
The Keg
As with all keg systems, the keg is the most important component. The Cornelius system has a stainless steel keg, complete with a lever-lock lid and an O-ring. The lid can be opened judiciously, but the circumference is just enough to get it cleaned properly after use. A plug and a post are made available for a gas inlet and to let your beverage out of the keg. Pin locks or ball locks are used to apply CO2. CO2 is administered, usually at a standard pressure, to carbonate the beverage in question.
A Cornelius keg, with a capacity to hold five gallons of beverage usually costs about 95 dollars. A reconditioned keg can also be purchased at 50 dollars but if you are looking for the lowest prices, you will have to purchase a used one. A second-hand Cornelius keg, comes to around 20 dollars. Stainless steel doesn’t rust usually, but care must be taken whilst using cleaning agents. Do not use agents which have the ability to corrode steel.
The Disconnects
Usually a flared disconnect is screwed up to the hose adapter and allows for setting up the CO2 system easily. There is another variety of disconnect – the barbed variant namely, which can also be used to hold the CO2 system in place. This variant is disadvantageous – the barb has to be inserted right into the hose and cannot be disconnected once it is setup. Cleaning the hose therefore is not possible if you make use of a barbed disconnect.
Pin lock disconnects usually have a collar. It is notched to slide down the adaptor. The notches in the collar have to be lined up to the pins before you can press down and attach the pin lock disconnect to the adaptor.
The ball lock disconnect is another variety which is available. The ball-lock disconnect makes use of a collar as well, the ball-bearings actually slides up to lock on to the adapter. An air tight connection is achieved when the disconnect latches on to the adapter, thereby allowing maximum CO2 intake.
The CO2 Tank
The carbon dioxide canisters are made from steel or aluminum and come in a variety of sizes. The 5 pound canister is usually used in the Cornelius system and can dispense gas which can fill up to 30 kegs. However, care must be taken to prevent gas from leaking. Leaks are the primary causes for empty gas tanks. Leaks around the adapters, the O-rings and near the valves have to be sealed immediately and constant pressure needs to be applied to carbonate your beverage.
